Sedatives are the drugs that subdues excitement and calms the subject without inducing sleep, through drowsiness maybe produced….or sedatives are drugs which reduce excitement and cause sedation.

sedation refers to ;
Non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep 70 -75%
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (paradoxical sleep)
stage – zero – eye movements are irregular
stage -one – (dozing) eye movements are reduced
stage – two – (unequivocal) easily arousable
stage – four – cerebral sleep, difficult to arouse.


Hypnotics are drugs which produce sleep and so are used in case of insomnia (sleeplessness).

The same drug can act as a hypnotic or sedative or both depending upon the dose, hypnotics and sedatives depress the central nervous system for producing sleep and sedation.

Glutethimide
